Three days in Bhuj: an unhurried itinerary for first-time visitors

Dharamshala entrance in Bhuj, a base for a three-day Bhuj itinerary

Bhuj rewards slow travel. The old town packs two palaces, a lake, a hill fort and one of India’s oldest regional museums into a few kilometres, and the best of Kutch begins just outside the city. This plan keeps the days light, with a morning start and an evening back at the dharamshala.

Check-out at our dharamshala is at 9:00 AM and check-in is from 10:00 AM. If you arrive early or leave late, ask the reception about keeping your bags safe while you explore.

Day 1: The old town

Start at Aina Mahal and the neighbouring Prag Mahal. One is an 18th-century palace known for its hall of mirrors, the other a 19th-century Italian-Gothic building with a tall clock tower. Plan about two to three hours for both, and check visiting days and camera rules at the ticket counter.

After lunch, walk the lanes around the market for bandhani, embroidery and block-printed textiles. As the light softens, head to Hamirsar Lake. The royal Chhatardi cenotaphs are nearby, and the lakeside is a pleasant place to end the day.

Day 2: Hill, memorial and museum

Go up Bhujia Hill in the morning, when the air is cooler. The old fort walls give wide views of Bhuj, and the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial on the hill tells the story of the 2001 earthquake and the city’s rebuilding.

Spend the afternoon at the Kutch Museum, founded in 1877, for coins, textiles, inscriptions and local art. On the way back, stop at the Swaminarayan Mandir and the Ramkund Stepwell.

Day 3: Choose a day trip

  • Mandvi (roughly 60 km): a long beach, a palace by the sea and a yard where wooden ships are still built the traditional way.
  • White Rann at Dhordo (roughly 80 km): the salt desert is at its most striking from late autumn to winter. A permit is generally required to go beyond the check post, so carry photo ID and confirm the current process locally. Read when to visit Kutch before you go.

Practical tips

  • Start early. Midday sun in Kutch is strong for most of the year.
  • Carry water, a hat and modest clothing for temples.
  • Opening hours and ticket prices change, so confirm them on the day.
  • Auto-rickshaws are the easiest way around town. Agree a fare before you start.
